Financial Therapy is ultimately a stress reliever!
Almost everyone stresses over…money. Financial therapy is a type of therapy I offer that focuses on the intersection of emotions, beliefs, and behaviors around money. Whether you are single and dealing with anxieties over money, or whether you are well into a particular relationship.
I am often dealing with someone, or a couple’s financial issues. A part of therapy is then also about addressing the psychological, emotional, and relational aspects of financial issues. I majored in Finance. I later owned and operated businesses in both San Francisco and Los Angeles.
In utilizing financial therapy with couples, there are many areas that “crossover” between the pragmatic and the emotional, leaving people confused or shamed as to the very real issues impacted.
I look to help couples struggling in areas such as:
1. Identifying Money Patterns: I first look to help you identify and articulate your shared money beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. This includes exploring how your upbringing, past experiences, and cultural backgrounds influence your financial outlook.
2. Communication: In any therapy involving a couple, an emphasis on open and honest communication is of utmost importance. This includes the taboo topic (for some) of money. We will work toward effective communication techniques to discuss financial matters without blame or judgment. This may include setting financial goals together and developing strategies to achieve them.
3. Conflict Resolution: Money disagreements are common in relationships and often lead to conflict. Financial therapy involves helping couples understand the underlying reasons for their conflicts and I look to work with you as to how to best resolve differences constructively.
4. Financial Education: Many couples may lack basic financial literacy skills. Just as in Psychodynamic Therapy, Financial therapy may involve education sessions where I provide helpful information about budgeting, saving, investing, debt management, and other financial topics, that you can then utilize going forward.
5. Behavioral Change: I look to help you modify unhealthy financial behaviors and develop healthier habits. This may involve addressing issues such as overspending, impulse buying, financial infidelity, or avoidance of financial responsibilities.
6. Emotional Support: Money can evoke strong emotions such as anxiety, guilt, shame, or fear. I look to provide you a safe space for couples or individuals to express and process these emotions without judgment. I will be providing you emotional support which will help you—both as a couple, or as an individual—with ongoing coping strategies.
7. Long-Term Planning: There are often immediate financial concerns to be understood and implemented. I then, as your financial therapist look to help couples and individuals create a clear vision for their financial future. This may involve developing a financial plan, setting priorities, and making decisions about major financial goals such as buying a house, saving for retirement, or planning for children's education.
